I have also made a simple automator application National Geographic POD available that simply downloads the latest Picture of the Day from National Geographic and sets it as the desktop wallpaper.
It can also be found on the Apple download site. Personally I have this set up as a task in iCal that it is run daily and I always get a new picture to look at. 8/Mar/2009 - National Geographic no longer provide a downloadable picture every day. The new version checks to make sure there is an image before replacing the desktop picture. What this means is that the desktop picture will no longer change every day.
